Pop Culture Club - Ten Things You May Have Missed in the new Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer

14/1/2015

Our second big look at Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped the other night and whilst we didn’t get a look at a whole lot of new stuff (Vision, I’m looking at you), there was a number of cool little things that stuck out to me as a film and comic book fanatic.
Picture
No criticism here. This looks amazing.
Follow me after the jump to watch the new trailer and for ten things that you may have overlooked in the new trailer.
First, watch the new trailer here, then we'll get into the things you may have missed!

Iron Brand

Cracking watch, yeah? But there's some new and mysterious stuff in there. Let's go over ten things that you may have overlooked!
Picture
Evans looks like he's feeling a little crap-tain America.

Pretty Green Eyes

Captain America (Chris Evans) can be seen gazing upon some destruction (Presumably Ultron’s, given the state of the damage in the shot previous to this) early in the trailer, but the key thing is the Avengers signature ‘A’ emblazoned on his arm. The Avengers seem to be a force known worldwide, and would keep in live with the reports that Stark Tower in New York is now renamed Avengers Tower. To my knowledge, this hasn't ever really occurred in the comics either, and its currently unknown if this will carry on into Captain America: Civil War or make a return for the Avengers: Infinity War films.

Picture
So full of sparkle and such light.
This is something that should seem pretty obvious, but this is the first return of Bruce Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo) green eyes as he prepares to change into the Hulk. This wasn’t even seen in the first Avengers movie, not even in the kickass moment when Banner explains how he can control his rage (to an extent). We’ll come back for more about Hulks eyes later.

The Lady of The Lake

Picture
No sign of Excalibur though.
Now, this is far more mysterious than anything else we see in the trailer. A cloaked woman disrobes near a pool of water in a dark, dimly lit cave… and that’s it. Yet this show asks so many questions, namely ‘who is this woman?’. There are actually three possible theories for this character.
Picture
Death, Hela, Ramonda or Shuri; Who is the mysterious woman?
  • Death: The woman in question could turn out to be the physical personification of Death in the Marvel universe, which does seem a long shot, but could tie into Infinity War incredibly well, giving Thanos a reason to besiege Earth, or have a vendetta against the Avengers.
  • Hela: The Asgardian vision of Death and Loki’s daughter in the comics, it’s possible the location of this shot could be Hel, the Asgardian Hell, with Hela as its ruler. Of course, the link to Loki will probably be downplayed should this be the case, but it would match up to the current theories about Thor, which I’ll be covering later.
  • Ramonda or Shuri: These two I’ve clumped together because they would serve the same purpose if they turn out to be true. Both have a tie to Black Panther, of who we know is now getting his own movie. Ramonda is the surrogate mother of T’challa (Black Panther) and Shuri is his sister, who would later become the next Black Panther. Either would serve to strengthen the theory that a portion of the film will take place on Wakanda, given the current theories about Andy Serkis’s character and the inclusion of a Vibranium-clad Ultron later in the movie.

A Look to Kill For

Picture
Yes, there really was no better shot of this without the hand.
This seems a bit minor, but Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) hairstyle here suggest further that we will see more of her reported backstory, or that she could go undercover for some reason within the course of the movie, which based on my conjecture could see Widow present for the arrival of Ulton at Hydra, which leads to the release of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

The Boat That Rocked

Picture
Or; Avengers Vs Raw
It’s not the only shot in the trailer to contain in, but we do see Iron Man getting his ass blasted (Presumably by Ulton, given the matching colour and shape of the red energy blasts) into a door on what looks like an old submarine or boat. We see Captain America tussling with an Ultron drone in a similar location later on. What does this mean exactly? Well, there’ll be fighting on a boat… for some reason…

Klawing At Straws

Picture
Pictured: Not an upcoming scene from the third Apes movie.
Another shot of Andy Serkis which only furthers the conjecture that he is Ulysses Klaw, an arch nemesis of Black Panther. Given that we know Vibranium plays a role in the movie, Panther is coming in the next year and we may have an appearance from either Ramonda or Shuri, I’d say this is pretty much an open and shut case, but only time will tell.

Having a Blast

Picture
Taste my lightning, fuckers!
Ultron (James Spader) is finally shown kicking some ass, and holy hell this looks impressive. Fitting in line with his comic book powers, this seems to showcase his energy projection, which matches up with the shot of Iron Man taking a huge hit in the submarine/boat. It is currently unknown whether his trademark ‘encephalo-ray’ (A ray which basically allows him to mind control people or turn them into sleeper agents) will make an appearance, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the inclusion of the shot of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch standing with him in the previous trailer, or more likely it will appear later in the movie, which we will revisit in a few points.

Unworthy?

Picture
OH GOD NO I DID NOT WANT TO TASTE THIS LIGHTNING
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is seen in a vaguely Asgardian looking location spurting lightning from his very being. Pretty standard, right? Wrong. Take a look at the scene again. Thor looks completely out of control with what’s happening to him. A look at the IMDB listing says that Asgardians do make an appearance in the movie, as well as Idris Elba leaking that Loki and Heimdall make appearances, so we know that Thor might revisit Asgard at some point in the movie, presumably whilst everyone is getting their arses kicked on the boat. However, it would tie in nicely with the suggestion that the woman at the lake is Hela, and with the shots of Thor reeling out of a dark pit of water, like some form of lazarus pit. This poses two questions; One, does Thor die at some point in the film? And Two, will this revisiting of Asgard and presumably Hel link directly into the events of Thor: Ragnarok?

The Latest Model

Picture
"Jesus Christ, Jarvis, I told you to update this thing to Lollipop!"
This seems pretty throwaway as well, but we do get a glimpse of the hew HUD used for the Iron Man suits, presumably the Hulkbuster. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) can be seen at the helm of a new orange HUD, a departure from the blue layout of all previous suits. Whether this is unique to using the Hulkbuster, or a change in operations after the removal of his Arc Reactor at the end of Iron Man 3, we shall find out in April.

Eye Irritation

Picture
"HULK... NEED... OPTREX!"
This is the big one. Hulk can be seen with red around his eyes during his fight with Iron Man. Now, to me this suggests the use of Ultron’s encephalo-ray, which means that Hulk is being used as a weapon against The Avengers so Ultron can carry on wrecking the world or whatever other nefarious schemes he’s cooked up. However, it could also suggest a complete loss of control over Hulk, which is normally the direct result of personal attacks on Bruce banner. Personally, I think it could point toward the theory that everyone wants to happen; The start of the Planet Hulk storyline. What could enrage Banner more than finding out one of your best friends is planning on launching you into space if you continue to lose your shit? This would also put Hulk directly in line to fight Thanos in time for Avengers: Infinity War or for a cameo in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.

And there you have it! Complete conjecture or predictions of truth? We’ll find out when Avengers: Age of Ultron lands in UK theatre on April 30th.
