Pop Culture Club - MCU Spider-Man: Everything We Now Know

Oh hey, Pop Culture Club is a thing we still do! So how about that Spider-Man, eh? It only took Marvel and Sony over four months, but we finally have our new Spider-Man, our new director and confirmation of his inaugural appearance in the MCU.

Marvel have gone back to their original casting roots and have given the role of Peter Parker to a relative unknown. Tom Holland is a British actor, known for period drama ‘Wolf Hall’, his starring role in ‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’… and not much else. In the process of scouting fresh new talent, the 19 year old actor from Kingston-Upon-Thames was selected from a never-ending list of potential young actors, which at various stages included Asa Butterfield, Logan Lerman, Dylan O’Brien and Charlie Plummer. Holland comes highly praised from legendary actor and director Ron Howard, who has commented that Holland knows how to handle the industry well and will bring heart and humour to the MCU. We’re very excited for him. And for us. It's Spider-Man, man!

Jon Watts will direct solo Spider-Man films

Again, a name that has seemingly come out of nowhere is the director for Spidey’s first new solo adventure. Jon Watts is known only for two feature films: ‘Clown’ and ‘Cop Car’. He was selected for his work on ‘Cop Car’, which stars Kevin Bacon, due to the level of action and suspense he was able to bring around a plot that concerned a couple of children stealing, you guessed it, a cop car. Having not seen his work (Cop Car isn’t out until August), we as an audience won’t get a taste of Watts’ style for a few months. What we do know is that he was hand picked by Kevin Feige (Praise be unto Him), which is as big as a personal recommendation you can get for comic book movies. All eyes will be on Watts very soon.

Spider-Man will appear in Captain America: Civil War

Civil War, the third Captain America movie, is filming in Atlanta right now. Tom Holland did his final screen tests with Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans in Atlanta. Spider-Man famously becomes a central figure in the Civil War graphic novel, originally siding with Iron Man. It does not take a genius to figure out Marvel’s game here. And sure enough, Marvel confirmed that our first taste of the new Spider-Man will be in Civil War. The movie itself is already jam packed with heroes. Not only are Cap, Iron Man, Black Widow, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Crossbones and Thunderbolt Ross all in this movie, we can now add Spidey and potentially The Hulk at some point. That is one busy film. Holland will certainly have his work cut out for him to stand out against a cavalcade of great actors. And other stars like Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) will have to work even harder to have ‘their moment’ in what could be the best Marvel Movie so far.

The New Spider-Man Trilogy begins July 28th 2017

This one we already knew, thanks to the shared universe deal that Marvel and Sony struck back in February. We of course now know that it will centre on a high-school Peter Parker, who will already be Spider-Man before the opening credits. Watts will be looking to focus on the teen drama demographic, given its unfaltering popularity in cinema, whilst bringing the suspense that garnered love from Feige (Praise be unto Him). Sony will of course be footing the bill for the production, but are now allowed to use any Marvel-owned character with permission from Marvel Studios. Most have theorised that this means that Iron Man and Phil Coulson could be crossing over to kick off the new trilogy. And although the movie is likely to centre on Spidey’s life in New York, we may see Peter visiting the New Avengers Institute before too long.

The Future is Still Fluid

Holland and Watts have reportedly signed on for the trilogy of Spider-Man movies and little else, save for Holland’s appearance in Civil War. What we’re uncertain of is Spidey’s involvement in the future of the MCU. It’s safe to say that he shan’t pop up in any other solo outing like Doctor Strange or Black Panther, but the cards are most certainly on the table for his inclusion in the Avengers: Infinity War movies, if not Part One then almost certainly Part Two. Likewise, nothing has been said of his inclusion in the Netflix Heroes series, but given the tone set by Daredevil and the recent announcement of Jon Berthenal as The Punisher, it’s safe to say that a Daredevil/Spidey team-up isn’t top priority right now. The conjecture could continue, but it’s probably safe to say that we’ll learn more about Spidey’s continuing role in the MCU at Disney’s own press event, D23.

People Will Never Be Happy

Upon the announcement of Holland as Spider-Man, the internet erupted with comments like ‘Another Spider-Man?!’, ‘He still isn’t black, I don’t care’ and ‘I hope they do something interesting and make him trans or gay’. It’s all a bit ridiculous that this is the mentality of the world when a young actor lands a dream role, let alone a role that could prove to be the most important in current cinema. A lot of the SJW type were disappointed that Spider-Man isn’t the Miles Morales version, who was part black part Mexican. I hate to link to it, but SJW wannabe and all around poor human being Sam Biddle can be seen throwing his toys out of the pram on Gawker right here. What a cunt.

And recently, Stan Lee himself was bought under fire for suggesting that Peter Parker should be white and straight because he has always been that way and to change it would  be undermining the character. Of course, the internet reacted well, only calling him ‘CIS scum’ a few hundred thousand times. Marvel has made people aware of their love for Miles Morales, even putting him in the mainstream Marvel universe comics alongside Parker and alternate reality Gwen ‘Spider-Gwen’ Stacey. If you love Spider-Man, there are now three different ones running about. What we’ve learned today, children, is that SJWs apparently have never read a comic book and would rather make binary changes to established character in order to make the world a little less racist or something. Instead of, you know, writing new black, gay and trans characters that are worth their heritage. But that would be insane. I mean, what would SJWs moan about then?

Well, that ended on a downer. Fuck it, who cares, Spidey is home in the MCU and we only have to wait another agonising year until we see the beginnings of Marvel’s Phase 3. A lead in to Civil War is expected in Ant-Man, which hits cinemas on July 17th.
