Pop Culture Club - Marvel's Daredevil: Something(s) You Should Know

18/2/2015

The first series in the… well, series, of Marvel and Netflix shows, Daredevil, drops in April. Last week, the best look we’ve had so far of the series arrived with a number of hidden details. Since the whole Spider-Man MCU saga, Daredevil has been somewhat side-lined in people’s thoughts. I’m here to set the record straight. This is a primers guide of what to expect in Daredevil and why it will be awesome.

Read on to watch the newest trailer and find out what you can expect in the Netflix series!
Watch the latest trailer below!

The Origin matters

When people saw that this would take Daredevil back to day one and tell the origin story again, people were understandably not excited. To that, I say “Come on man, just give them a chance, it could be good!”. And when they don’t agree with me, I say “FUCK YOU, here’s why this shit matters!”

In this series, Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil), will take his new origin from the retcon series ‘The Man Without Fear’, written by divisive writer Frank Miller. I’ve made my thoughts on Frank Miller very clear in the past (tl;dr, His classic work is fairly good but overrated, and now he’s gone full apeshit and should be completely ignored in a sane conversation), but regardless of what you think of Miller, his work with more gothic heroes has always been good. You enjoyed his work on Batman? You’ll love his run on Daredevil, and consequently you’ll love Marvel’s Daredevil. I’d go so far as to say that ‘The Man Without Fear’ was the last good thing Miller ever wrote, and the fact that it serves as a basis for the true MCU Daredevil is very exciting.

Miller carefully reworked the big character aspect to influence the Matt Murdock we know and love today. So what does this mean for the Netflix series? Well, during this origin retelling, you’ll get to see a younger Matt working with Stick, a blind martial artist, on how to navigate and fight with a lack of sight. You’ll get to see how Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, comes to know about the Daredevil whilst trying to become the kingpin of crime in Hell’s Kitchen. For certain, we’ll be exploring the martial art and ninja origins of this universe, more than likely resulting in the birth of The Hand, which will play huge part in future Daredevil stories. Later on, we could even see the doomed romance between Murdock and Elektra show up.

True Grit

Compared to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where so far a cavalcade of costumed heroes saved the world from a Norse god and his army of space monsters and a group of thugs from the cosmos combine to stop a big blue man from punching a planet with the power of purple, Daredevil is way more grounded. The Netflix series is said to take the approach of setting up ‘street-level’ heroes, which makes total sense. So far, the only dependable heroes in this world are four of the most in-demand juggernauts of the world or agents of the now defunct SHIELD. And they’ll kind of be busy trying to save the world from a sentient A.I. hell-bent on killing all human life, so it’s highly unlikely they’ll be on call to break up a brawl in some dive bar in Queens.

Enter Daredevil and the rest of his Netflix cohorts. The fights in this series will be way bloodier, far more personal affairs. Expect Matt to go toe-to-toe with his father killers, members of the Hand and associates of Wilson Fisk during his rise to the position of Blind Guardian of Hell’s Kitchen.

Little Black Number

Here’s the biggest talking point so far; The costume. Ripped straight from the pages of The Man Without Fear, this black ninja style getup in the costume Matt Murdoch wears in order rescue some punk named Mickey. It is very much the initial seed of the legend of the blind guardian, and as an origin point, is total badass. Imagine getting your ass handed to you by a blind ninja. Scary, right?

Matt Murdoch is the image of fear in this getup, before embodying the devil within him later in his story. In the series, what we’ll see is the costume gradually changes over time until Matt is ready to suit up in his classic ‘red devil’ getup in time for the Defenders tagteam miniseries. Expect the suit to start incorporating the reds the more he draws blood in his brawls; a baptism of blood, if you will.

A Bit On The Side

There’s not much information on the side character that Daredevil will introduce, but there’s a high chance that Jessicas Jones (Kristen Ritter) or Luke Cage (Mike Colter) could make an appearance, considering they’re set to play big parts in their won series in close proximity to Daredevil’s antics. Two people we do know are making an appearance though are Night Nurse and possibly even Owl.

Night Nurse is just that. A nurse who operates at night. Oh, and she specialises in medicine for superheroes. She’s also had ties to characters like Doctor Strange in the past, so there are already potential MCU lines to be crossed here. What is interesting is that this version of Night Nurse will be an amalgamation of Georgia Jenkins, the second Night Nurse, and Clare Temple, a former love interest of Luke Cage. Can you say crossover? Realistically, this Night Nurse is likely to be the person who keeps our street team running following their constant battering and bruising rather than a medical crusader.

Owl is a different kettle of fish. In the comics, Owl is a man genetically altered by a serum to be stranger than a normal human, with gliding capabilities, talons and an enhanced jump, like that of an owl. Let’s be real; we probably won’t see that. An endurance fighter, maybe. An actual owl man? Probably not. Yes, it’s a stupid set-up, but I will forever live in hope that this Daredevil series will end with a full on supervillain throw down when Daredevil finally suits up all in red. We can but live in hope.

Where can it go?

Picture this: Daredevil and the Defenders fight back against the forces of evil threatening the streets of Hells Kitchen. The city has their own guardians whilst the big league boys are gearing up to fight Thanos. Then, Karen Page, Matt Murdock’s love interest, goes missing. Time passes. Karen resurfaces, and much to Matt’s dismay, has given away his secret identity to fuel her drug habits!

It’s a model that I think the Arrow TV series has done incredibly well, and should Daredevil choose to adapt the story I just described, which is called Born Again which you should definitely read, you would get one thing; Escalation. Stakes being raised with every episode. Kingpin hunting Murdock down and tearing his life asunder piece by piece would be such a satisfying watch for a potential second season. Not to mention you could totally include the craziest comic book character I think I’ve ever comes across. Seriously, Click here, you won’t regret learning about this crazy motherfucker.

Tie all this blood for blood action with a deeper exploration of Murdoch’s Catholic roots and you have got one stylish, bloody and incredibly engaging future for this show. I’m excited and we don’t even know it’s happening yet!

Marvel’s Daredevil arrives on Netflix on April 10th.
