Foul E3 - The Good and Bad of Sony's Press Conference

16/6/2015

Sony have absolutely slayed E3 for two years running with the PS4. Can they make it three? Sony take to the stage with their PlayStation line up, and these were the best and worst bits.

First up, the final first impressions of E3's first day:
What an end to the first full day of E3, eh? I mean damn... Anyway, let's get to the night's/mornings best and worst bits.

The Good

The Last Guardian

Picture
We all thought this game was doomed to the bin of 'Coming Soon' like Half Life 3 and Beyond Good and Evil 2. This changes next year, when the final part of the Team Ico trilogy finally graces the PS4. Tea Ico Games have always looked beautiful and The Last Guardian looks to be no exception. Like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus before it, we are most likely looking at another timeless PlayStation classic. Can it be 2016 yet?

No Man's Sky

The immense scale of this game should be a commendable achievement on it's own, never-mind the stellar art direction and intergalactic scavenger-come-Oregon Trail gameplay that has kept this title so interesting, even though we still don't know when it's coming out. Seriously, I need to explore this universe soon, Hello Games! And soon is not soon enough.

Destiny: The Taken King

Picture
Right, it's clear that I'm a sucker for Destiny now. All it took was the footage of the new super attacks for me to put Destiny: The Taken King into the best bits from the Sony Conference. Add in that there is still going to be exclusive missions and weapons, my choice of PS4 is still well justified.

Final Fantasy 7: Remake

Picture
I may not have had as many fond memories of this game as many people, but you'd have to be blind to ignore the influence this game has had. And the visual for the remake look absolutely stunning. I may even give the game a better go this time. It looks beautiful and it will make a lot of people happy. A bit like a high class hooker.

Shenmue 3

Picture
Holy shit, we were not expecting this. So whilst it's less of an announcement and more an announcement of the Kickstarter, there is no doubt that this will get funded and make its way onto the list of PS4 exclusives that everyone will be salivating over for the next year. All other story based games may as well retire now. The granddaddy of them all is back.

The Bad

PlayStation Vue

Picture
This TV streaming service seems to only benefit about 5 cities across the world with a selection of channels that leave a lot to be desired. We would have preferred a partnership with HBO or AMC, but instead we get Machinima. Great. That network isn't at all harmful to it's very users. Fuck that noise.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Picture
So as it turns out, that Microsoft-Activision deal is now the Sony-Activision deal. Which unfortunately means we can't lump each years boring Call of Duty gameplay reveal into a shittier conference. Black Ops 3 doesn't looks offensively bad, but the very tone of the conference shifted in order to cram in the pitiful gunwank gameplay that we've all come to hate from COD. And the sad part? This reveal is gonna be a long time thing. Perhaps if we all just sit in a quiet corner and mumble insanely, it will all go away.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Picture
I am so far in the minority for this one, I'll end up having to march for civil rights. Look, this game shouldn't be closing the show after we've heard about it two years on the trot. It simply isn't final surprise material. Yes, the gameplay looks find, yes it's a pretty game, yes the animation is pretty dang excellent. But this game isn't even out yet and I'm already sick of seeing or hearing about it. The gameplay demo was great, but if that had been the middle demo and the bigger announcements were at the end, I feel the ending wouldn't have been so flat. Like I said, I am so the minority here.
