Five Minority Oscar Nominees and Winners

1/3/2016

Controversy was rife over this years Academy Awards, with several claims from Hollywood alumni and Twitter hashtag movements that the Oscars did not make enough nominations to minority actors and filmmakers. Here at FoulENT, we're putting this allegation to rest with five examples of when the Academy recognised some of the most oblique of minorities.

Denzel Washington (Winner)

Right from the off, it’s obvious why this one made the list. Denzel Washington is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, and the highest grossing minority figures of recent times. Denzel is famed for being one of the only black actors to be named after an Only Fools & Horses character. In addition, Horse from The Full Monty, who played Denzil Tulser in Horses, is actually an Oscar winner himself (if a film you’re part of wins an Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack counts as winning an Oscar, which it does).

Chris Rock (Nominee)

Chris Rock has never been nominated for an Oscar, but he did once audition for an advert for Oscar Mayer Wieners. More recently, Chris Rock was recognised by the Academy by being given hosting duties for the 88th Academy Awards as the only openly white person in Hollywood. You may be thinking that Chris Rock is of course a black actor, but think about it this way: Chris Rock is so white that he hosted the Oscars.

Whoopi Goldberg (Nominee)

Goldberg was nominated for Best Actress for Ghost, but ended up winning Best Blacktress for Sister Act. Goldberg is also one of the only minorities to be nominated for Worst Stone Cold Steve Austin Lookalike, which he lost out to Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Eddie Redmayne (Winner)

Eddie Redmayne is the only male actor to have won Best 'Spactor' for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. But he's not only excellent at portraying people with special needs, he's also famous for playing a woman better than a woman could in The Danish Girl, which netted him a nomination for Best Actress. Or Best Actor. It's hard to know what to call them, to be honest.

Ellen Page (Nominee)

Ellen Page is one of the few gay women in Hollywood, and is an outspoken advocate of raping Rainn Wilson in shit movies. A move she hypocritically went back on a by raping Rainn Wilson. Page also gained an Oscar nomination for Juno and her portrayal of a teenage mom that surprisingly wasn't fucking scum. Good on you, Ellen!
